After a frantic December of ticket selling mayhem, we decided to give Festivarian Nation a peaceful January free from Notes and posts. Amid snowdrifts and relaxed bluegrass picks, we hope you found a quiet time to recover from sell-out stresses and begin piecing together summer festival dreams with your festivarian family. Maybe you even took some time watch this Del & Sam soundcheck or stream the new Steeldrivers record...
Though we were outwardly silent, here in Lyons we've been hunkered down – talking with artists, sketching lineups, even writing a book. Today our silence ends. Meet the complete 2013 RockyGrass...
Where last year's 40th anniversary lineup honored the legends who helped shape RockyGrass, the single-day lineup for the 2013 RockyGrass (July 26-28) celebrates the spirit of collaboration...
13-time Grammy winning Dobro player Jerry Douglas is putting together a unique only-at-RockyGrass trad bluegrass band. Legends Sam Bush and Del McCoury will share a special duet set. The jamband and bluegrass worlds collide with Keller Williams and the Travelin' McCourys. Mandolinist Andy Statman debuts his new trio with Tim O'Brien and Michael Cleveland. String wizards Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky & Rushad Eggleston present their Old-Time Kozmik Trio, and so many more...
Friday, July 26 • Del McCoury Band | Tim O'Brien | The Kruger Brothers | The Steeldrivers | Kathy Kallick Band | Helen Highwater featuring David Grier, Mike Compton, Missy Raines & Shad Cobb | Jayme Stone | Front Country
Saturday, July 27 • Jerry Douglas & Friends | Carolina Chocolate Drops | Sam Bush & Del McCoury | Blue Highway | Old-Time Kozmik Trio featuring Darol Anger, Rushad Eggleston & Bruce Molsky | I Draw Slow | The Deadly Gentlemen
Sunday, July 28 • Sam Bush Bluegrass Band | Keller Williams with The Travelin' McCourys | Peter Rowan | Andy Statman Trio featuring Tim O'Brien & Michael Cleveland | Head for the Hills | Cahalen Morrison & Eli West | Gospel Set
Looking at the other new additions... Carolina Chocolate Drops explode with a jubilant love for old-time stringbands (their 2008 set remains legendary). Several RockyGrass debuts bring fascinating fusions of trad and modern: the epic folk and grasscore of The Deadly Gentlemen; the beautifully crafted duets of Cahalen & Eli; worldly banjo master Jayme Stone; and the Irish slant on bluegrass from Dublin quintet I Draw Slow. It's going to be quite a festival.
Single-day tickets will go onsale next Thursday, February 21 at 9am MST at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422. Camping in Bohn Park will still be available for single-day ticketholders, though our other 2 campgrounds are now completely sold-out.
Three-day passes sold-out in early January – a full month earlier than ever before. But we are now accepting volunteer applications to earn your 3-day pass.
If you were among the lucky ones who secured a spot in the RockyGrass Academy, we're excited to share the names of the remaining instructors. The enormously talented Sharon Gilchrist completes this year's mandolin faculty; guitarist/vocalist Stephen Mougin (of the Sam Bush Band) will be teaching this year's vocal class. Don't forget that Academy remainder payments are due by April 1.
Each year's Folks Festival reveals itself to us in its own time. Though we're still not quite ready to share a preliminary 2013 lineup, we've confirmed a few artists that are so inspiring we can't keep them to ourselves any longer.
For years, we've nurtured a Australia-Lyons connection. This year we welcome back one of the superstars. Guitarist John Butler performed a wonderfully laid back solo set for us in 2004 (and his wife Mama Kin entranced us in 2011). This August he'll help the St. Vrain cliffs come alive with the deeply meaningful and virtuosic grooves of his John Butler Trio. Oh yeah.
"This is my voice. There are many like it, but this one is mine..." If you're unfamiliar with Canadian spoken word genius Shane Koyczan, prepare to have your life changed. Shane's passionate poetry backed by the sophisticated, emotional folk-pop of The Short Story Long is unlike anything we've ever heard – provocative, life-affirming, and transcendent. Spend some quality time with Shane's music and amidst the tears and goosebumps you'll look at your world differently. We're serious; this man is a force of truth and heart.
We're busily confirming artists with the hope of announcing a preliminary lineup in the next few weeks, along with an initial faculty listing for the sold-out Song School. In the meantime, 3-day passes and camping (including onsite campground and Meadow Park RVs) are available right now at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422.
With 5 shows on the calendar and our new permanent heaters operational, we're excited to announce the 2013 Spring Wildflower Concert Series in Lyons. Join us for these intimate Friday evenings in our indoor "cathedral of bluegrass."
From jamgrass (Mountain Standard Time) to singer-songwriter (Peter Mayer) to trad bluegrass (The Hillbenders) to 2 very special CD release shows (Whitewater Ramble and Danny Shafer) we're looking forward to a magical springtime of music in the Wildflower.
Tickets for all of these shows are available now at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422.
Congratulations to all of this year's Grammy winners including Steep Canyon Rangers; Chris, Edgar, Stuart and Yo-Yo for their Goat Rodeo Sessions; and especially to Mumford & Sons for their well-deserved Album of the Year nod. In case you missed "Winston's Guide to 2013," the M&S banjo grinner shares his thoughts about our upcoming 40th Annual "wonder-fessie" in Telluride.
We're getting close to announcing the rest of the Telluride Bluegrass lineup. In the meantime, Thursday and Sunday single-day tickets are still available – a fact which will likely change quickly once we've revealed the rest of the historic lineup. 'Nuff said.
