"This is where our band was born. There's always been something special about the way people here interact with music."
– Ben Kaufmann (Yonder Mountain String Band)
Tickets and camping are still available for this weekend's final two days of high-energy summer bliss on Planet Bluegrass: the Kinfolk Celebration featuring Yonder Mountain String Band & Friends (Friday-Saturday, August 24-25).
Ten years ago Yonder Mountain String Band launched their inaugural Kinfolk Celebration at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch. This year their annual celebration of community, camping, and musical mania returns for the first time in 9 years to Lyons, Colorado – a place Yonder guitarist Adam Aijala affectionately calls "one of our favorite music venues, period."
Tickets and camping (under the redstone cliffs of the St. Vrain River at Meadow Park) are still available at 800-624-2422 or shop.bluegrass.com. As always, we charge no handling fees on any tickets (whether purchased in advance or on-site at the festival box office). While tickets will likely be available at the box office all weekend, order yours before Friday morning and you'll save $5 per day from the on-site ticket price.
The 2-day Celebration features some of Yonder's favorite musicians – including Greensky Bluegrass, Todd Snider, Split Lip Rayfield, and Larry Keel & Natural Bridge. And of course, Yonder will be performing 2 epic sets under the dramatically lit cliffs each evening – with guest dobro master Andy Hall (of the Infamous Stringdusters). Check out the complete daily schedule – gates open at 3pm on Friday and 5pm on Saturday.
In talking about this weekend's Celebration, Yonder bassist Ben Kaufmann immediately turns to the Yonder community: "The whole thing is to celebrate the family experience – our extended family." In that spirit, the band will be playing a special all-request set from suggestions submitted online by fans.
They'll also be extending a hand to their fellow Coloradoans in-need by hosting a silent auction to benefit the Colorado Fire Relief Fund. Kinfolk will have the opportunity to bid on archived posters and signed merchandise, tickets to upcoming events, and instruments & gear (!) from the band's vault.
This weekend coincides with the US Pro Challenge cycling race, which brings 100 of the world's top riders through downtown Lyons on Saturday afternoon. Plan to arrive in Lyons before 1pm on Saturday to enjoy the race and avoid possible traffic delays. Or ride the free (!) Boulder-Lyons shuttle with your fellow Kinfolk.
To help you get through this Kinfolk Celebration eve, watch this short video interview with Yonder bandmembers discussing the magic of Lyons; check out several recent Yonder interviews about this weekend's upcoming magic including Aurora Sentinel, Bluegrass Today, Listen Up Denver, and Grateful Web; or grab some free Yonder Mountain live downloads made available exclusively for Kinfolk Week.
The weekend's forecast is for low-80s and sunny – perfect for cooling your feet in the St. Vrain River one last time alongside your fellow Festivarians and Kinfolk. This is going to be a special weekend. We can't wait to share it with you.
