The Planet Bluegrass stages and campgrounds in Telluride and Lyons have long inspired a spirit of creative collaboration. From spontaneous on-stage jams and surprising vocal harmonists to off-stage co-songwriting and the births of new bands, Festivarians have shared in the creative euphoria that comes with new musical friendships.
This August we are honored to host another historic musical debut, as three legendary American musicians / songwriters / bandleaders – Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Chris Robinson (Black Crowes) and Jackie Greene – give their first-ever trio performance on the Folks Festival stage in Lyons...
Bob, Chris & Jackie join a 21st Annual Folks Festival (Aug 19-21) lineup that now also includes: the spectacular and soulful voice of Martin Sexton; the Red Horse trio of longtime festival favorites Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky; the affable warmth of Livingston Taylor; the musical wit of Vance Gilbert; and newcomers Anais Mitchell (who recorded last year's brilliant Hadestown folk-opera with collaborators Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon) and Colorado's own ukulele-wielding Danielle Ate the Sandwich (think "Joni Mitchell meets Sarah Silverman"). Here's the latest lineup:
Bob Weir, Chris Robinson and Jackie Greene • Brandi Carlile • Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band • Carolina Chocolate Drops • Martin Sexton • Red Horse: Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka & Lucy Kaplansky • Mary Gauthier • Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion • Livingston Taylor • Anais Mitchell • Vance Gilbert • Dan Mangan • Danielle Ate the Sandwich • Megan Burtt • And many more still to be announced...
For 3 glorious days we'll gather under cliffs and Cottonwood trees to share songs and stories. Plant our chair in the St. Vrain River, hang a hammock from a tree, or make room on our tarp for new Festivarian friendships – informed by a shared love for music, the outdoors, and the end of another Colorado summer.
Bring the entire family for a musical weekend of river rock sculptures, sand castles, tubing the St. Vrain, campground song circles, intimate performances in the Wildflower Pavilion, the internationally-recognized Folks Songwriter Showcase songwriting contest, and musical inspiration lurking behind every tree.
Tickets and camping are available now – including on-site camping adjacent to the festival or under the dramatic cliffs at Meadow Park. Order now at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422. As always, Planet Bluegrass charges no service fees and all Folks Festival tickets are fully refundable if returned by July 15.
Once you have your tickets, take a minute to begin re-connecting with the Folks Festivarian family by RSVP'ing on Facebook. Then begin digging into some of this year's music – the NPR feature interview with Red Horse, one of Danielle Ate the Sandwich's whimsical and poignant YouTube videos, or a wisdom-filled conversation about songwriting with Livingston Taylor.
After several weeks of standing-room "dancing shows" in the Wildflower Pavilion, this Friday night (April 8) we're putting down all the chairs for an intimate listening evening of virtuosity featuring 7-time IBMA bass player of the year Missy Raines and her hot newgrass-jazz quartet The New Hip, and a special opening set from Juno award-winning global banjo adventurer Jayme Stone and his acoustic quintet.
Then next Friday (April 15) we welcome back Folks Festival (and Song School) favorite Ellis with special guests Driftwood Fire for a singer-songwriter evening in the Wildflower.
Tickets are still available for both shows at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422. As always, we charge no service fees and advance tickets are $2 less than the door price, so make your plans now to join us for a magical Spring Friday evening on the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons.
The word "sold-out" continues to multiply all over our website as both Telluride Bluegrass and RockyGrass continue to sell at a historic pace. Only Thursday single-day tickets remain for the 38th Annual Telluride Bluegrass (June 16-19), with both 4-day passes and Fri/Sat/Sun single-day tickets now completely gone – over a month earlier than anytime in the past decade.
Similarly, RockyGrass 3-day passes sold-out last weekend (a month earlier than ever before), leaving only Friday and Sunday tickets left for our 39th annual traditional bluegrass festival in Lyons (July 29-31). Don't wait any longer – order your RockyGrass single-day tickets right now at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422.
If you missed out on tickets, lookout for hope. Our Festivarian Forum at www.festivarian.com has ticket exchange boards for both RockyGrass and Telluride Bluegrass. As well, as we get closer to the refund deadlines for Telluride Bluegrass and RockyGrass we will be releasing returned tickets on Tuesdays at noon MDT in the "Returned Ticket Resale" section of shop.bluegrass.com.
Watch for the Telluride NightGrass announcement in the next week or so. We promise it will be worth the wait. In the meantime, check out the stream of the upcoming Alison Krauss & Union Station album at NPR, and let the dreams of summer on Planet Bluegrass begin to come into focus.
