Spring series finale with 2 brilliant singer-songwriters... [ Wildflower image ]

Joe Pug at the 2011 Telluride Bluegrass FestivalThis Friday night (April 28) we complete our Spring Wildflower Concert Series with two of our favorite singer-songwriters: Joe Pug and Anais Mitchell. Tickets are still available at 303-823-0848 or shop.bluegrass.com.

"Not only does [Joe Pug] have a beautifully mature voice, but the lyrics... possess wisdom seemingly beyond his age" (NPR Music). After dropping out of a college playwright program to work as a carpenter (and songwriter) in Chicago, Joe found his audience by mailing out free CDs to anyone who would listen -- more than 15,000 of them. Soon Joe was performing sold-out shows and recording albums for Nashville's Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver). Joe's literate, emotional songs have earned comparisons to his heroes Bob Dylan and John Prine and main stage spots at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and several Planet Bluegrass festivals: 2009 Folks Festival and 2011 Telluride Bluegrass Festival. (Hear Joe interview Anais Mitchell in his Working Songwriter podcast.)

Anais Mitchell at the 2011 Folks FestivalVermont and Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Anais ("uh-NAY-iss") Mitchell approaches music from the world of narrative folksong, poetry and balladry. Among Anais's catalog are 6 full-lengths (released on Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe and Anais's own Wilderland labels), including 2010's critically-revered Hadestown, a folk opera based on the Orpheus myth; 2012's Young Man in America, which UK's The Independent calls "an epic tale of American becoming"; and 2013's Child Ballads, a collaboration with Jefferson Hamer which won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Traditional Track. Anais made her Planet Bluegrass debut as a Song School instructor and performer on the 2011 Folks Festival main stage.
