Exactly 6 months from tonight Sam Bush will walk onto the newly constructed Town Park stage for his 42nd consecutive Telluride Bluegrass. It's a Saturday evening tradition that gives every Festivarian goosebumps, as the King of Telluride and his F-5 mandolin address the magical kingdom of Festivarian Nation with the ceremonial "Who's been to the festival all 4 days?"
As we approach the winter solstice and the longest nights of the year, we're excited to share many of the artists who will be joining Sam Bush this June 16-19 for the grand acoustic adventure of the 43rd Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival...
Sam Bush Band • Neil Finn • Emmylou Harris • John Prine • Telluride House Band featuring Sam, Béla, Jerry, Edgar, Bryan & Stuart • Béla Fleck & The Flecktones • Yonder Mountain String Band • Del McCoury Band • Dave Rawlings Machine • Tim O'Brien Band • Leftover Salmon • Punch Brothers • Jerry Douglas Band • Greensky Bluegrass • Peter Rowan Band • The Infamous Stringdusters • Chris Thile • The Kruger Brothers with the Kontras Quartet • Shane Koyczan & The Short Story Long • Sierra Hull • The Lil' Smokies • more still to be announced...
The 2016 lineup includes many of the inspiring artists who have defined our ever-expanding genre of "Telluride Bluegrass" for the past 42 years --- including the 14th year for the "Queen of Telluride" Emmylou Harris; a special reunion of Béla Fleck & The Flecktones; the most acclaimed band in traditional bluegrass, Del McCoury Band; and the only appearance of the all-star Telluride House Band featuring 6 of the world's most revered acoustic musicians Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer (who celebrates his 25th Telluride Bluegrass!), Bryan Sutton and Stuart Duncan.
Among the new highlights of this 43rd Annual gathering are the Telluride Bluegrass debut of legendary New Zealand songsmith Neil Finn (Crowded House, Split Enz); remarkable Swiss chamber bluegrass trio the Kruger Brothers performing works with the Kontras Quartet; brilliant Canadian spoken word performer Shane Koyczan (performing an inspiring Sunday morning set); and virtuosic mandolinist Sierra Hull (check out this gorgeous track from her upcoming Béla Fleck-produced CD).
As consummate crafters of the ever-growing Telluride songbook, we're thrilled to welcome back iconic American songwriters John Prine, Tim O'Brien and Peter Rowan; as well as the recent recipient of the Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting (with partner Gillian Welch) Dave Rawlings Machine.
And from 15+ year TBF veterans Leftover Salmon and Yonder Mountain String Band, to Punch Brothers, Greensky Bluegrass, the Infamous Stringdusters, and the Lil' Smokies the 2016 lineup welcomes many of the most vital and energetic voices in progressive acoustic music to the box canyon at 8,750'.
Four-day passes were sold-out within minutes on December 4th, setting a new speed record while also causing frustrating glitches with our 60-server-strong ticketing system. Thanks to everyone for your patience with us on that very busy Friday morning.
If you missed out on four-day passes, we will begin releasing returned tickets on the "Returned Ticket Resale" section of shop.bluegrass.com on Tuesdays, beginning in January. Yes, you read that right: this resale will begin in January. That's two months earlier than past years in order to get these tickets into Festivarians' hands as quickly as possible. Watch for more details at bluegrass.com and on our Facebook page in the coming weeks.
Single-day tickets for Thursday and Sunday, as well as camping in 3 of our campgrounds (Telluride High School, Lawson Hill, and Mary E Ilium) are still available at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422. As always, Planet Bluegrass charges no handling fees on any orders.
Since this will be our final "Notes from the Planet" of 2015, we should gently warn you that the few remaining single-day tickets for RockyGrass, as well as our limited allotment of early/holiday discount tickets for the Folks Festival, will likely be gone by the end of December. Please spread the word to your Festivarian family.
From all of us on Planet Bluegrass, we wish you a magical holiday season filled with family, friends, and joyous music. We can't wait to share 2016 with you!
With much love,
The Folks on Planet Bluegrass
