With tickets now on-sale (and some sold out faster than two shakes of a lamb's tail) we have officially entered into the best time of year... festival season!
We may be waking up to bare trees and snowstorms, but our dreams have begun turning to visions of greenery and warmth. Like children marking holiday advent calendars, we are diligently crossing off the days until we can see you in Lyons next summer... there are only 230, in case you weren't already counting!
Now, we wouldn't normally interrupt your regularly scheduled Friday, but we've got some news too juicy to keep to ourselves: the preliminary lineup for the 44th Annual RockyGrass Festival at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons...
Friday, July 29 • Steep Canyon Rangers • Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas & Edgar Meyer • Tim O'Brien • Good Ol' Persons (reunion) • Bryan Sutton Band • Rapidgrass Quintet • more to be announced…
Saturday, July 30 • Sam Bush Bluegrass Band • Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn • Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver • O'Connor Family Band featuring Mark O'Connor • Tony Trischka Band • Nick Forster & Danny Barnes • Slocan Ramblers • Instrument Contest Finals
Sunday, July 31 • Punch Brothers • Rhonda Vincent & The Rage • Peter Rowan Band • Flatt Lonesome • Michael Daves & Friends • The Railsplitters • Gospel Set
Our RockyGrass lineup this year is about as heavily decorated as your grandma's basement, and probably smells better, too! Huge congratulations to 2016 RockyGrass artists the Punch Brothers, legendary mandolinist / vocalist Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn for their recent Grammy nominations. We hope you'll also extend a hearty pat-on-the back this July to recent International Bluegrass Music Association award winners: Rhonda Vincent (8-time Female Vocalist of the Year), Jerry Douglas (9-time Dobro Player of the Year), and Bryan Sutton (9-time Guitar Player of the Year). And we're thrilled to welcome 2015 Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo & Bluegrass winner Danny Barnes for a special duet set with Hot Rize's Nick Forster.
If you're looking to spruce up your playlists, we've been loving new albums from 2016 RockyGrass artists Tim O'Brien, Steep Canyon Rangers (who headline RockyGrass 15 years after winning the band contest), and IBMA's 2014 Emerging Artist of the Year Flatt Lonesome. And speaking of new music, how about some ol' favorites? Good Ol' Persons are reuniting just for RockyGrass Festivarians, playing their first Lyons set since 1998.
Legendary fiddler Mark O'Connor plays RockyGrass for the first time since 2004, debuting his O'Connor Family Band. Sam Bush triumphantly returns, marking more performances on the Planet Bluegrass stage than we have fingers or toes to count. In addition to his only-at-RockyGrass Sam Bush Bluegrass Band, he'll be collaborating in a trio with fellow virtuosos Jerry Douglas & Edgar Meyer.
Providing a direct link to the father of bluegrass (and festival founder) Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys along with the music's progressive future, Peter Rowan returns on Sunday. For those who were lucky enough to snag spots for the RockyGrass Academy, y'all can look forward to bands-in-residence Slocan Ramblers and the Tony Trischka Band.
If your eyes aren't already popping out of your skull from the awesomeness, this is sure to cinch the deal: rip-roaring guitarist/vocalist Michael Daves will pick with abandon on Sunday afternoon; high-energy Colorado quintet RapidGrass open the Festival with a fervor; and we've invited back The Railsplitters, who rocked the most wildly sold-out Wildflower Pavilion show since he flood reconstruction. And there's more to come, still...
While 3-day passes and Saturday single-day tickets sold-out shortly after going on sale last week, single-day tickets are still available for Friday and Sunday as well as camping in two of our campgrounds. If it took ya longer than molasses running uphill in winter to look fer tickets, fret not! Starting Tuesdays in March, we'll put any returned tickets on the "Returned Ticket Resale" section of shop.bluegrass.com, where you can have at ‘em!
A very limited number of early discount tickets for the 26th Annual Rocky Mountain Folks Festival are still available. With a special holiday discount of $25 off 3-day passes -- these won't last long! Get ‘em at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422, before the price increases.
