The humble duet. The intimate interplay between two artists has long been one of our favorite musical forms -- from our recent Del & Sam show in Boulder; to the upcoming Telluride duets from Emmylou & Rodney and The Milk Carton Kids; to the virtuosic pairing of Rob Ickes & Jim Hurst soaring into our Wildflower Pavilion next month.
Here on Planet Bluegrass the past month has been soundtracked by a spirited Festivarian duet between "NightGrass?" and "Folks?" With tickets completely sold-out for both Telluride Bluegrass and RockyGrass, it's the natural next question. So with this email we sing the final "all together now" chorus, answering the two biggest questions coming from the hills of Telluride and Lyons...
From the twilight gondola ride leading to Yonder Mountain String Band's 12th Annual Kick-Off Party in Mountain Village, right on through to Punch Brothers' epic festival closing celebration at the Sheridan on Sunday, the 2013 NightGrass series make the most of the shortest nights of the year. Once again we'll be filling 3 Telluride venues with late-night energy -- the historic Sheridan Opera House, underground at the legendary Fly Me to the Moon Saloon, and the modern acoustics of the Palm Theatre on the west edge of town...

But before you stand up for a brief NightGrass celebratory boogie, we should tell you: the online lottery for the Saturday night Sheridan show featuring Mumford & Sons with special guest Sara Watkins is open right now (!) thru 11:59pm MDT tonight (!!). As you're submitting your entry, be sure to pay careful attention to special ticketing policies put in place to deter scalping at this show.
Tickets for the remaining shows at the Sheridan and Fly Me to the Moon (the 2 smallest venues) will be available via an online lottery next Wednesday-Thursday (April 10-11). All remaining NightGrass tickets (including Palm Theatre and Telluride Conference Center) go onsale on Thursday, April 18 at 9am MDT.
We're looking forward to some special late-nights,
including the only Telluride appearance for high-energy old-time quintet Pert Near Sandstone, the hotly anticipated rootsy soul-pop of Lake Street Dive, and the beautiful revelry of a Saturday night with Elephant Revival and Sarah Jarosz.
Still looking for festival tickets? Songwriters can win their way into Town Park in the Telluride Troubadour contest -- the submission deadline is next Saturday, April 13. If you do already have festival tickets, don't forget that camping is currently still available in 3 of our campgrounds.
Led by Loreena McKennitt's powerful fusion of Celtic and Middle-Eastern musics and John Butler Trio's Australian grooves, the 23rd Annual Rocky Mountain Folks Festival (Aug. 16-18) reflects our original vision to create a "summit on the song" that crosses both geographic and musical borders. We're thrilled to share the preliminary lineup for this late-summer celebration of stories and songs along the St. Vrain River in Lyons...
• Loreena McKennitt • John Butler Trio • Patty Griffin • Colin Meloy • Mary Gauthier • Nathaniel Rateliff • Lynn Miles • Shane Koyczan & the Short Story Long • Arianna Gillis • Robby Hecht • Songwriter Showcase • and many more still to be announced...
Looking deeper into this initial lineup... Grammy-winner Patty Griffin returns for her 4th Folks Fest appearance after spending much of the past few years as an integral member of Robert Plant's Band of Joy (check out this wonderful new track). Colin Meloy -- the musician, author, and leader of indie-folk-rock icons The Decemberists -- joins us for a rare solo set. And we welcome several artists from the recently-announced faculty at The Song School including the vibrant musical truth-teller Mary Gauthier and graceful Canadian songstress Lynn Miles.
We'll be adding many more artists in the coming weeks, leading up to the complete single-day lineup (and the release of single-day tickets) in early May. Three-day passes and camping (including the coveted onsite campground) are available now at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422.
After a full-house for last Friday's opening night show, music continues on Planet Bluegrass in Lyons tonight with the high-octane bluegrass of The Hillbenders and special guests Finnders & Youngberg; followed by the wondrous songwriter (and Folks Festival favorite) Peter Mayer with special guest Bella Betts next Friday.
This series of intimate concerts in our indoor Wildflower Pavilion continues thru April, culminating in the aforementioned evening of dobro and guitar duets with the masterful Rob Ickes & Jim Hurst. Tickets are still available for all these shows at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422. With pre-show bonfires, beer and wine, and the pristine acoustics of the indoor Wildflower Pavilion, we can't wait to share these magical Spring evenings with you in Lyons.
