Your Telluride day seems basically maxxed out: Wake up early for a breathtaking hike to Bear Creek Falls. Grab a relaxing cup of coffee on Main Street. Lay out your tarp spot for the day and catch a mind-blowing set from Darrell Scott. Run over to Elks Park for a mandolin workshop then hang out with the kids for an hour in Juggler's Grove. Before you know it, the sun has gone down, Ryan Adams has energized and awakened you, and you're still hungry for more musical magic. Fear not, the NightGrass shows have only just begun...
With nightly shows at indoor venues - including the Sheridan Opera House, Fly Me to the Moon Saloon, and Las Montañas - the 2008 schedule of NightGrass shows includes intimate performances with many of our favorite performers: Yonder Mountain String Band at the historic Sheridan Opera House, Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile, Emmitt Nershi Band, John Cowan & Darrell Scott, The Duhks, Uncle Earl, Cadillac Sky, Steep Canyon Rangers, Spring Creek Bluegrass Band, and a very special evening with the McCoury Boys & Friends.
The gondola runs late every night to make sure you're able to enjoy the entire show before heading up to Mountain Village. That gondola will be filled with Festivarians at sunset on Wednesday night, June 18, as many of us head up the mountain for the 7th Annual Kick-Off Bash with Yonder Mountain String Band at the Telluride Convention Center.
Tickets for this and all the other NightGrass shows will go on sale at 8am MDT, Wednesday, April 9 - online-only at shop.bluegrass.com. In addition, we'll again be offering a very, very limited number of all-venue passes. Set your alarm for 8am - some of these tickets will sell-out in the first few hours.
Denver's Westword newspaper recently named last November's show from The Swell Season as their best concert of 2007, praising Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for "interacting with the crowd and each other in such an intimate a manner that the audience became not just witnesses to their love story, but part of it." We'll all be part of the magic on Sunday night when they take the Telluride stage.
They're part of a 35th Anniversary Telluride lineup that also includes: Ani DiFranco Band, Arlo Guthrie, Ryan Adams, Paolo Nutini, Hot Rize, Leftover Salmon, Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby, the Sam Bush Band, and much much more. After a winter enriched by in-depth discussions with top sustainability experts, we're thrilled to begin unveiling our 2008 doctrine of Sustainable Festivation. To begin... the Telluride Bluegrass Festival will again be a completely carbon-neutral festival, offsetting everything from beginning to end with renewable energy - including everyone's travel emissions to and from Telluride (whether they're coming from Santa Fe or Norway).
Last year we were the first festival to take this historic step toward a completely carbon neutral festival. This year we're once again asking you to help us out by voluntarily purchasing your own travel offset - just $5 per person. Then in the coming weeks we'll be unveiling our next step toward sustainable festivation: simple "projects" you can do to help make the rest of the 2008 festival season completely carbon neutral.
We adore Missy Higgins - for her sincerity, for her passion, and for her proudly Australian vocals. She's been a superstar in Australia since high school, and this August she'll be yet another highlight of the 18th Annual Rocky Mountain Folks Festival (August 15-18). She's also joined on this year's Folks lineup by Canadian singer-songwriter Luke Doucet - an endearing performer who, faced with a bout of laryngitis at his recent SXSW showcase, invited different friends to sing in his place in what became a charming evening of live Doucet Karaoke.
One of this year's Folks performers, Tim O'Brien, just released his newest solo album, his first since the Grammy winning Fiddler's Green. "Jaunty, accomplished and funny," writes No Depression. This new album (listen here) features Tim accompanying himself on a variety of instruments - just as he'll perform on our Telluride and Folks stages this summer.
Three-day passes and camping for this year's Folks Festival are available now at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422. From KT Tunstall to Greg Brown, Patty Griffin to Amos Lee, this year's "Summit of the Song" will be the perfect way to wind down your Colorado summer with us in Lyons.
Congratulations to Béla Fleck, whose documentary film Throw Down Your Heart, about his journey to explore the African roots of the banjo, was awarded the audience prize at the 2008 SXSW Film Festival. Béla will be performing in various collaborations, including with Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet, at this year's RockyGrass (July 25-27).
Now that RockyGrass single-day tickets are on-sale, the race is on. If you're planning on purchasing just Saturday tickets, you should get those soon. Otherwise, you'll be "stuck" having to buy a 3-day pass and spend an entire weekend immersed in traditional bluegrass with the Dan Tyminski Band, Sam Bush, Natalie MacMaster, JD Crowe, Peter Rowan, and many more; tubing down the cooling St. Vrain River; and making new life-long festivarian friends. The choice is yours... Tickets and camping for the 36th RockyGrass festival are available now - online at shop.bluegrass.com or on the phone at 800-624-2422.
Finally, our plan for a spring season of concerts in the Wildflower Pavilion has been distilled down to one unforgettable gala concert, Friday, May 2, as we feature over 40 of Colorado's finest women in bluegrass. Together with Lyons' volunteer-run High Street Concerts, we present More Pretty Girls Than One... II featuring Mollie O'Brien, Joan Wernick, Helen Forster, KC Groves, Sally Van Meter, Jessie Burns, Sally Truitt, and many many more, in an evening to benefit the Lyons Community Foundation. Tickets are on-sale now at shop.bluegrass.com.
