At 11:48pm MDT last night, the sun began its trajectory toward the Solstice, toward our 35th festivarian reunion in Telluride, and toward - a mere month later - the bluegrass heaven that is RockyGrass. To celebrate this solar inflection, we are proud to announce the single-day lineup for the 36th Annual RockyGrass (July 25-27)...
In addition to the names you already know - Dan Tyminski Band; Natalie MacMaster; Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet featuring Béla Fleck. We are excited to add several collaborations to our daily lineups: Virtuosos of all things stringed, Mike Marshall & Darol Anger will be rocking and Bach-ing early Friday afternoon. On Sunday, Stringduster fiddler and vocalist Jeremy Garrett will be organizing a beautiful gospel set with the assistance of many of his Infamous musical cohorts. And the great Béla Fleck will be inviting many of his friends to join him for a special set on Friday evening.
The RockyGrass Friday night is capped by the same trio that wowed Carnegie Hall last fall - Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and Edgar Meyer. Then Sam closes the festival on Sunday night with another set from his only-at-RockyGrass "Bluegrass Band," capping a night that includes JD Crowe, and Peter Rowan.
We have fallen for several of the younger bands on this year's RockyGrass bands, and increasingly, we're not the only ones. The gorgeous new CD from Chatham County Line is winning diverse praises: "this music isn't a product of its era, but nor is it married to a bygone one. It's essentially timeless" (Pitchfork). Give their new CD a listen online and set your alarm clock early on RockyGrass Saturday morning. Meanwhile, The Steeldrivers are being widely adored, including by the USA Today, who write: "the group has galvanized into a force in bluegrass and beyond."
Of course, the soul of RockyGrass lies at least partially in the legendary campground jam scene. For this one weekend, we're confident there are more brilliant pickers per square foot on Planet Bluegrass than anywhere else on the planet.
Single-day tickets, three-day passes, and several camping options are available now at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422. Last year's RockyGrass sold-out in May, and we don't expect tickets to be around much past May again this year. So gather your RockyGrass gang and order your tickets now. Or you'll be regretting it in July. We promise.
After years leading his own band, The Wallflowers, Jakob Dylan just completed work on a solo record with Rick Rubin, the producer behind numerous masterpiece recordings, including Johnny Cash's final work. Jakob's voice and songs are front-and-center on this new record - right where they'll be when he performs on the Folks Fest stage this August.
Jakob joins a growing lineup that already includes KT Tunstall, Amos Lee, Greg Brown, Patty Griffin, Todd Snider, Tim O'Brien and many others, with many more still to be added. Tickets and camping are available now - at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422 - for an August weekend along the shady banks of the St. Vrain River. Single-day tickets for Folks, will be available later this spring, as soon as we announce the complete single-day lineup.
We continue to add to the faculty for our unique week-long songwriting retreat, The Song School (Aug, 10-14). Chicago-based songwriter Susan Werner is the latest addition to join Pat Pattison, Steve Seskin, Paul Reisler, and many others. Spaces are filling quickly. So don't wait too long to book your week of songwriting craft and inspiration here at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons.
We are now a mere 90 days away from the 35th Telluride Bluegrass - Ryan Adams, Ani DiFranco, Leftover Salmon, the Telluride House Band, Tift Merritt, and many others under the full moon summer solstice. Tickets, camping, and lodging are still available - shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422.
We know many of you are eagerly awaiting the announcement of tickets and schedule for NightGrass at Telluride Bluegrass. We're confirming the last couple bands right now and we hope to have more details in the next "Notes from the Planet" email. Don't worry, we won't put tickets on sale until we've announced the on-sale date in one of these emails.
The next time you stop by bluegrass.com, take a minute (literally, no more than that) to give us your feedback about our new website. We just sent off a Telluride Bluegrass CD to festivarian Jason Nickel for filling out our quick survey. We'll draw another winner in the next couple weeks.
Finally, congratulations to a couple of our virtuosic friends. The "King of Telluride" Sam Bush was just honored by the Kentucky state senate with a Resolution: "in honor of Kentucky’s own Sam Bush, the founder of New Grass music." Meanwhile, just down the road in Nashville, another performer on the 35th Telluride Bluegrass lineup, Ricky Skaggs, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the prestigious Berklee College of Music for his "virtuosity, his rich musicality, and his commitment to the deep roots of American music." Congratulations to them both. With the Grammy's, IBMA awards, and even Academy Awards, the Telluride stage will barely be large enough to hold them all this year...
