Ignore the snow falling outside your window for a minute and close your eyes. Picture the towering peaks of Telluride looming overhead; the Colorado solstice sun glowing through your eyelids; a field of tarps under you; the warmth of the Festivarian family engulfing you...
In your ears... the voice of Darrell Scott soars over the valley with "Colorado, I need healing." Arlo Guthrie spins a seemingly spontaneous story that magically leads into song. Red Knuckles steps out onto the Telluride stage for the first time this century. And on your face is the biggest smile you've felt in a year; a smile you share with the 10,000 new friends that surround you.
This moment of imagination has moved one step closer to reality, with the announcement of the complete single-day lineup for the 35th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival (June 19-22).
Yes, Arlo Guthrie, Hot Rize with Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers, and an opening set with Darrell Scott will all be part of the 35th Telluride Bluegrass celebration. We've also added the youthful high-energy folk of The Duhks, the gritty traditional bluegrass of IBMA's 2006 Emerging Artist of the Year The Steep Canyon Rangers, and a special Béla Fleck set titled "Duos with Friends."
The complete single-day lineup is now posted at bluegrass.com. From an opening Thursday including Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Ani DiFranco, Del McCoury, and Uncle Earl; to a Friday featuring Leftover Salmon, Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby, Paolo Nutini, and Tim O'Brien. And don't even get us started about the bliss of Saturday and Sunday — Sam Bush Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Tift Merritt, Brett Dennen, Solomon Burke...
Single-day tickets, four-day passes, and camping are all available now at shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422. Forward this email to your Festivarian crew, add a couple new friends to your camp, then make your plans for the convergence of the full moon, summer solstice, music, and magic in Telluride.
Congratulations to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for winning the "Best Song" Academy Award two weeks ago. Their stirring performance on the Oscar's — and Glen's triumphant call-to-arms of "Make art! Make art!" — was a preview of the passion and beauty they'll bring to the Telluride stage together as The Swell Season and in Glen's Irish rock band The Frames (who are making one of their only appearances of 2008 at Telluride Bluegrass).
If some of the names on this year's lineup sound new to you, take a few minutes to excite yourself with a few video links from bluegrass.com. Then start up a discussion about one of these new artists in the Festivarian Forum. We're devoted fans of every single performer on this anniversary lineup and we're confident that by the final chords on Sunday night, you will be, too.
For the past few years, festival performers like Bonnie Raitt have been consistently singing the praises of Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall — her powerful edgy vocals, her smart catchy songs, her rock'n'roll attitude. This August we'll finally find KT on a Planet Bluegrass stage as she performs at the 18th Annual Rocky Mountain Folks Festival (Aug 15-17).
Joining KT is another new addition, Patty Griffin, who will paint her intimate musical portraits with a heartbreakingly vivid voice. These two artists join an expanding lineup that already includes Amos Lee, Todd Snider, The Waifs, Greg Brown, and many more — with many more to be announced in the coming months.
Three-day passes and camping are on sale now — including those coveted on-site camping passes. Plan for an August weekend along the shaded banks of the St. Vrain River in Lyons now — shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422.
If you spent the February 29th leap day indulging in a few extra moments of creativity, consider spending an entire week this summer at our creative retreat, The Song School (Aug 10-14). It's five spirited days of inspiration, craft, and deep friendship with some of the world's greatest songwriters. Space is filling quickly. Make your reservation now.
Oh, RockyGrass, we love you, too. So much so, in fact, that this humble email would surely burst with the added excitement of our traditional bluegrass festival in Lyons. So watch out for the next "Notes from the Planet" in a week or so. RockyGrass single-day lineups and single-day tickets are just around the corner...
