Just a couple weeks ago we were all together in Telluride watching Nickel Creek and Barenaked Ladies ponder the many uses for a million dollars, and now here we are... only 16 beautiful Colorado summer days away from RockyGrass.
Festival tents are sprouting all over the Ranch and there are exactly zero festival tickets to be found. Well, Planet Bluegrass to the rescue... as we teased in our last email, we're selling a small number of RockyGrass MoonGrass tickets starting Thursday, July 13 at 8am MDT. Join us late-night in the Wildflower tent for intimate performances with Tim O'Brien, Uncle Earl, and The Wilders. More info below...
An important note to all you RockyGrass campers, we are moving the vehicle lines in the town of Lyons for both RockyGrass Academy and RockyGrass. In the interest of everyone's safety, Academy cars will now line up on Railroad Avenue and RockyGrass vehicles will line up in Olson.
Speaking of Academy, we still have a precious few spaces left in the bass class and in mandolin building. This year's schedule (now posted on our website) incorporates more one-on-one sessions, more songwriting classes, and a delicious set of electives - including "Let's Talk Licks with Roland White," "Playing with Space," and "Incorporating Colors with Chords." Reserve your space now - 800-624-2422. You never know who might be hanging around at Academy this year...
Did you forget to purchase Willy Matthews' gorgeous watercolor poster from the 33rd Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival? We now have a few for sale on our website - www.bluegrass.com.
This year's Song School brings together a fascinating faculty of performers, professors, and music business professionals, including Jane Siberry, Vance Gilbert, Billy Jonas, and Pat Flynn. Spend a week with all of them, August 13-17, discussing such topics as "Singing from the core," "Embellishing your song," "Life stories," along with lots of one-on-one mentoring, open stages, and inspirational time by the river. Space is still available and the full schedule is now up on our website.
We received close to 900 entries for the 2006 Folks Songwriter Showcase. With entries coming in from all over the world, including Australia and Europe, this year's Folks Showcase looks to be among the best ever. We'll announce the finalists on our website this Friday and you can hear them perform on the Folks Fest stage on August 18. That's along with Kris Kristofferson, Ani DiFranco, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Guy Clark, the Australian Dylan - Paul Kelly, and many many more. More info below...
In the heart of summer, autumn feels like a distant dream. And it should. But you might want to take a quick moment now to pick up some special holiday-priced tickets to our Festival of the Mabon on September 23. After July 14, tickets to hear The Duhks (pictured, left), Shooglenifty, Toubab Krewe, and many more will increase by $10. Then return to the lazy haze of summer...
Finally, our friends over at etown have a couple of great live tapings in Boulder over the next few weeks. On July 23 they welcome Darrell Scott with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. And join them the day after RockyGrass for the Chautauqua Bluegrass Bash with Earl Scruggs and Hot Rize on July 31. We'll see you there.
The Folks on Planet Bluegrass
Rocky Mountain Folks Festival
It's fitting that our Folks Festival lineup is rich with stories...
After selling off many of her worldly possessions, eclectic Canadian artist Jane Siberry recently changed her name to Issa Light. Australian trio The Waifs return to the stage after an extended maternity leave - sisters Donna and Vikki Simpson gave birth within a day of each other! Elvis Perkins channels the artistry and tragedy of his parents Anthony Perkins and photographer Berry Berenson. Guy Clark crafts songs with the same patience and passion that he puts into building his own guitars. Kris Kristofferson celebrated the 70th year of his storied career as a songwriter, performer, and actor just a couple weeks ago.
Join us on the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons as we write the story of the 16th Annual Rocky Mountain Folks Festival. Relax in the cooling waters of the St. Vrain, share your own songs in campground jams, enjoy songwriters in the round performances in the Wildflower tent, and watch top national talent compete in the renowned Songwriter Showcase. Oh and, Ani DiFranco, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Sonya Kitchell, Amos Lee. Learn more...
