Who doesn't love a good top ten list? This month's issue of the respected national music magazine Relix features the cover story "10 Concerts That Rocked the World." The list includes Dylan plugging in at Newport Folk in 1965, Woodstock, the closing of Fillmore East, and... #6 - The 1990 Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Will this year's lineup - including Barenaked Ladies, John Prine, Nickel Creek, Yonder Mountain String Band, Drive-By Truckers, and all the only-in-Telluride surprise collaborations - earn their way into tomorrow's history books? Ask any of the grinning festivarians next week...
We're just over a week away from the 33rd Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival and it's not too late to make plans to join us. Four-day festival passes ($175), single-day tickets ($55), and camping are all still available. As always, Planet Bluegrass charges no handling fees and all tickets can be picked up at will-call in Telluride. Order at bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422 | 303-823-0848.
The Telluride weather forecast is for a sunny 75°F next week and the music forecast is for "awesome." Among those joining us in Telluride is Bonnie Raitt who recalls her last visit in 2000 - "I loved the vibe of playing the festival...so eclectic, tribal and such
a wild celebration. The audience was as incredible as the vibe was
backstage. It's like the whole town is one big partying tribe, and in
one of the most stunning settings you could imagine." Bonnie kicks off her summer tour next Thursday night - a day which includes Neko Case, Tim & Mollie O'Brien, Drew Emmitt, and the bluegrass superpicking of Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Tim O’Brien, and Bryan Sutton. Yeah, we can't wait either.
Again this year, the Elks Park stage in the middle of town will host a variety of music contests, workshops, and intimate performances all weekend - including a mandolin workshop with Sam Bush, Drew Emmitt, and Mike Marshall; and a Sunday Jam with Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, Luke Bulla and others. The complete schedule is available online and in the festival program.
Tickets for many of the late-night indoor Telluride NightGrass shows are still available. Though both Yonder Mountain String Band shows are sold-out, we still have tickets for John Prine, Tim O'Brien, Chris Thile, and several others. Check out the complete schedule at bluegrass.com.
If you're new to Telluride, you'll be lovingly welcomed into a community of festivarians who make their annual pilgrimage from all over the world. For a little taste, check out this tune - Packing for Telluride (9.3MB MP3 file) - from longtime festivarian James Buchanan, a member of Camp Wander-in' in Town Park. Or listen to an interview with the festivarian mayor of Town Park, Telluride Tom, on the Colorado Public Radio program Colorado Matters.
In other Planet Bluegrass news... The complete Folks Fest schedule is now posted on our website, and, man, it's a goodie. New additions include the much-admired Texas songwriter Guy Clark, and a pair of international greats - Welshman Martyn Joseph and Australian Paul Kelly. We'll have lots more to say about Folks Fest in the coming weeks. It's got all the makings of a classic.
Finally, RockyGrass is now completely sold-out. If you missed out, we will be releasing a very limited number of returned tickets on July 10. Or rearrange your vacation plans and join us in Telluride next week. You won't regret it.
