This Friday night (April 9) we welcome one of Colorado's true musical treasures, Pete "Dr. Banjo" Wernick to the 2nd show in the spring Wildflower Concert Series. A member of the highly influential bluegrass band Hot Rize, Pete is a sought-after collaborator, sharing stages with the likes of Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon, Earl Scruggs, and even Phish. Steve Martin, who had Dr. Banjo perform at his wedding, sums up Pete's style: "[he] plays the banjo the way it's supposed to sound, melodic, rhythmic, and musical."
We start the evening with the traditional bluegrass of Long Road Home. Martin Gilmore and Justin Hoffenberg have re-formed their RockyGrass band contest winning sound with Grammy-winning bassist Gene Libbea, RockyGrass mandolin champion Jordan Ramsey and Dr. Banjo. Check out the seasoned interplay on their wonderful new CD or watch them live.
Then we welcome Pete Wernick & Flexigrass, the jazz-bluegrass sextet Bluegrass Now calls "an adventurous expression of creative genius." Flexigrass combines banjo with vibraphone, clarinet, drums, bass, and the vocals of Joan Wernick. Dave Johnston of Yonder Mountain String Band calls their latest album "A necessary album for burning up the Interstellar highway." (Watch video)
